Winter to Spring Music Transition

By Eliot Richards

The birds are chirping, the sun is out, the masses are doing whatever the fuck they do on Eddies when its above 65 degrees. But most importantly, the winter spookies are finally being lifted for those of us whose brain function plummets with a severe lack of vitamin D. As our hemisphere warms, so thaws the synth pop, the dreamy spring instrumental, and the generally upbeat light-hearted tunes. Don’t get me wrong, this transition must be gradual: you can’t just go from constantly hearing the reverb of Elliott Smith in your eardrum, (among other music that concerns your friends) to full blown Charli XCX. That’s enough to give the most stable person whiplash. This is why there is Spring! It’s a time to balance and mix the wistful with the joyful. Spring is a time when one of your arms is pulled into summer while your foot is firmly stuck in the cement of the wintry school season, no matter how hard you fight to get it loose. Nevertheless, Spring is a time for music that inspires you to shatter the cement that holds you rooted to the spot. Think Clairo’s Sling album, The New Abnormal byTthe Strokes, think Blood Orange, and Al Green, and Vampire Weekend, and fuck it, dip your toes into Solar Power! It’s your Spring and it’s fleeting! What will the soundtrack be? Personally, I’ve been pulling out some Hole from my archives and dabbling in the new Kacey Musgraves album. Spring is a time for rebirth, growth, and getting accustomed to the return of your warm weather personality just in time for summer to sweep you away. Please, I beg you to put down the music that makes you want to bask in your own gloom. It’s Spring, for God’s sake!

Note: I see the irony while I submit this as we have flood warnings – the sentiment is there from when I wrote it two weeks ago though!
